“Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, and Snoop Dogg … I would want Michael Jackson but I don’t think he’d like all the weed smoking,” says Wiz Khalifa, listing the names of his fantasy Met Gala table. After last year’s all-white Rag & Bone look, Khalifa and his stylist, Lauren Matos, decided to up the ante for the museum’s annual ball this past Monday, remixing the idea of a black-tie tuxedo. “I was having dinner with the team at Thom Browne and we just started on the look together. It was a really collaborative effort, we were sending sketches back and forth, tweaking them before the fitting a couple of weeks ago,” explains Matos in the dressing room of the Bleecker Street penthouse Khalifa has set up for Met Gala prep.
The result was an ivory tailcoat with black piping, based on a look from Thom Browne’s Spring 2017 menswear collection. The rapper paired the jacket with a matching waistcoat, high-waisted black pants, and heeled white boots with chunky laces, as well as an assortment of his own dazzling personal jewelry. A pair of gold-rimmed Thom Browne sunglasses added a final touch of punk-inspired pizzazz.
And once he’s suited and booted, there are always a couple of pre-game rituals to attend to before heading uptown to the ball. “A bit of gin, my blunts, and music,” he says, laughing. “I’ll be hitting at least three after-parties and it’s a long night, so I gotta make sure I am feeling good!”
